A free morning — sleep in, return to your favourite alley, buy spices at the souk. Optional afternoon: a hands-on Moroccan cooking lesson. Learn harira soup, briouats, and the finest chicken tagine.

Pass through Ifrane's alpine town, meet wild Barbary macaques in the cedar forest, cross the Middle Atlas, descend through the Ziz Valley palm groves, and arrive at Merzouga as the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise on the horizon.

Rise before 5am for a camel trek to watch the Sahara sunrise. Return for breakfast. The day is yours: sandboarding, visiting a Berber nomad family, or lying in absolute silence. Tonight: star-gazing dinner under Africa's darkest skies.

Drive through the Valley of Roses. Stop at Todra Gorge where 300-metre limestone walls narrow to barely 10 metres. Continue along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs into the dramatic rose-red Dades Gorge for your first night.

The Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260m) — one of the most dramatic road crossings in North Africa. Arrive in Marrakech. Tonight: let the city come to you at Djemaa el-Fna square — storytellers, acrobats, snake charmers, and the best orange juice on earth.

Visit the 19th-century Bahia Palace, Ben Youssef Medersa with its extraordinary zellige courtyard, and lose yourself in the souks. Your guide knows the honest shops and the ones to avoid. Evening is yours.

Morning: private traditional hammam experience. Afternoon: explore the cobalt-blue Majorelle Garden. Late afternoon: hands-on cooking class making couscous and tagine. Final farewell dinner together.
